PROJECT OVERVIEW

Volunteers of America Chesapeake & Carolinas (VOACC) is a faith-based health and human services nonprofit serving Maryland, the District of Columbia, Virginia, and the Carolinas. In 2023, VOACC delivered comprehensive services—including housing, behavioral health care, veteran support, re-entry programs, and disability services—to more than 11,700 low-income and underinsured individuals. Each year, VOACC publishes an Annual Report to showcase the organization’s impact and express gratitude to its donor community.

CHALLENGE

VOACC needed a compelling, donor-facing Annual Report that not only highlighted the year’s achievements but also strengthened emotional connection with funders, partners, and community stakeholders. The goal was to move beyond a static report and create a storytelling-driven piece that celebrated impact, inspired trust, and reflected the brand’s mission.

SOLUTION

​As Executive Director of Development & Marketing at VOACC, I led the creative direction, storytelling strategy, and visual design of the 2023 Annual Report. My approach emphasized donor appreciation and human impact—framing complex program outcomes through the lens of real-life transformation.

Key Contributions:

  • Creative Strategy & Design Execution

    • Wrote and designed the 11-page report using Adobe Illustrator and InDesign

    • Aligned the narrative with VOACC’s brand identity, voice, and values

    • Balanced data visualization with rich storytelling to humanize service outcomes
       

  • Content Curation

    • Collaborated with regional teams to gather and integrate first-person impact stories from each service area, highlighting the breadth of VOACC’s work across multiple states

    • Featured narratives that connected program success directly to donor support, reinforcing the organization’s gratitude and transparency
       

  • Production & Distribution Oversight

    • Directed VOACC’s print vendor in the production and fulfillment process

    • Successfully delivered the report to 9,000+ major donors and stakeholders, both in print and digital format

    • Launched the report on VOACC’s website to broaden public access and visibility

RESULTS

  • Produced a visually engaging, emotionally resonant Annual Report that reinforced VOACC’s credibility and donor-centric mission

  • Strengthened the organization’s donor stewardship efforts by positioning supporters as central to the year’s achievements

  • Enhanced VOACC’s brand presence and storytelling capacity through high-quality design and unified messaging
